Kids Summer Camp
Music Theater Summer Camp
Teen Boot Camp
Starting in 2000 Lee Coleé-Atnip put an advertisement in the local Wimberley paper announcing that she would be directing a summer music theatre camp for kids 8-16 and the show would be the family favorite, Annie. No one knew if this would be a success or a dud. Nothing like it had ever been done before in Wimberley, but 35 kids appeared to audition and 27 were chosen for, at that time, a one week camp with three performances. It was a sold out spectacular success that the town talked about for months afterwards.
The following years have brought sold out runs of Guys and Dolls, Grease, Fiddler On The Roof, The Sound of Music, Oklahoma, and last year's hit The Music Man. The casts are limited to 35 kids and once they are selected they must learn the whole show before the first day of camp, not knowing which parts they will be playing.
As camp commences on the first day, the kids get their assigned roles and classes and rehearsals begin. The kids study and rehearse for over 70 hours in two and half week period with professional performers and technical theatre experts as their mentors. Sessions in dance, voice technique and acting are intense and no cast member has just a "walk on". Everyone has the same amount of stage time and works at their skill level to the best of their ability. Theatre is a team sport and everyone learns very quickly to integrate their particular job into the ensemble effort. Due to audience demand, the kids now perform seven shows.
Not all of the kids turn into the newest gift to Broadway but they all emerge from a camp experience with a huge boost of self confidence, increased performance skills and a deep appreciation for the arts. We have also started them on the road to becoming loyal and discerning patrons of the arts.
